I remembered this short sci-fi story this evening. If any of you have even the slightest interest in sci-fi it's well worth 10 minutes of your time.
On a slightly more classic note, you could also do worse than The Man Who Would Be King, by Rudyard Kipling. A truly excellent shortish story, about 2 british soldiers who set off to become kings. You should see the film too, starring Sean Connery and Michael Caine.
